Nestled on the scenic slopes of Maui’s Haleakala National Park, what started as a botanical garden has blossomed into a spectacular hillside lavender farm.
When staying at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, make time for the Alii Kula Lavender Farm. One of Maui’s hidden gems, this working farm is well worth the visit.
Alii Kula encompasses 13.5 acres teeming with over 55,000 lavender plants, olive trees, hydrangea flowers and succulents. While lavender isn’t native to Maui, the national park provides the cool, dry climate and rich volcanic soil ideal for growing the fragrant flower. Visitors can see the brilliant purple blooms year-round.
Exploring a Lavender Landscape
Take in panoramic views of Maui as you stroll along tranquil walking paths surrounded by sweeping fields of lavender. For a more in-depth look at the farm’s history and design, go on a guided walking or cart tour, offered daily. During or after your tour, you can also arrange gourmet picnic lunches for your group — the perfect way to relax, refuel, sip refreshing lavender tea and take in the beautiful surroundings.
Throughout the year, the farm offers special events, including seasonal craft classes. Hands-on activities range from making an herb wreath to planting a living container garden and creating a unique holiday ornament.
Guided walking tours are available from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for $12 per person. Guided cart tours are offered twice daily at 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. for $25 per person. Online reservations are recommended.
Treats and Treasure
Families will love the free lavender treasure hunt, which takes you through the grounds on a scenic adventure. Perfect for kids of all ages, the treasure hunt begins at the on-site gift shop, where you can pick up your map. Then you’ll follow clues as you explore enchanting off-the-beaten-path areas of the farm. Once completed, you can pick up your prize back at the gift shop.
Speaking of the gift shop, Alii Kula offers plenty of genuine lavender goodies for sale. Peruse everything from luxurious bath and body products to tasty treats, including lavender teas, coffees, scones, honey and more. No matter your preferred way of enjoying this soothing scent, you’ll find a great souvenir to bring home with you after a memorable visit.
